Spine

Scoliosis and Spinal Deformity

Specialist evaluation of abnormal spinal curvature in children, adolescents, and adults — including when to monitor, brace, or operate.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. Most cases are mild and only need monitoring, but some progress and benefit from bracing (in growing children) or surgical correction. The right plan depends on the curve magnitude, the growth remaining, and the symptoms.

Dr. Zuhair Abu Salma evaluates scoliosis with a focused exam, full-spine standing X-rays, and (when needed) MRI. Decisions are made with the patient and family, not for them.

Common symptoms

  • One shoulder higher than the other, or an uneven waistline
  • A visible curve when bending forward
  • Back fatigue or pain that worsens with activity
  • In adults: progressive pain, numbness, or stiffness over years

When to see a doctor

  • A visible curve, especially in a child or teen whose growth is ongoing
  • Rapid progression over a few months
  • Pain, numbness, or weakness that interferes with daily life
  • A previously monitored curve that has crossed a treatment threshold

What to expect at your visit

  • Full-spine standing X-rays and a discussion of curve magnitude and growth remaining
  • A clear plan for monitoring intervals, bracing (when appropriate), or surgical options
  • Time for the family to ask questions and understand trade-offs
